Taylor Swift is one of music’s biggest money-makers, so to say that she carries a bit of star power would be an understatement. The blonde beauty proved her worth over the weekend, releasing a major smack-down on Apple, who had previously announced that they would not be paying artists signed on to their groundbreaking new streaming service, one that’s garnered much media attention.
Taylor took to her Tumblr, her public diary of choice, to explain why she’s refusing to release her latest album, “1989” to Apple’s new streaming service.
“I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service,” she told fans. “I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company.”
She continued, “We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”
Eddy Cue, Apple’s CEO, admitted in a Sunday interview, “When I woke up this morning and read Taylor’s note, it really solidified that we need to make a change,”
Speak Taylor, and you shall receive. Now, artists will be compensated during the free-trial period, sending Taylor into a fit of joy. One small step for Taylor, one giant step for artists everywhere.
What say you, reader? Is Taylor right on the money? Or is she barking up the wrong tree? Discuss!
