This is a story of a parent whose child called her “fat”. Allison Kimmey had gone to the pool with her children, a boy and a girl.
When she told them that it was time to get out of the pool, the girl told her brother, “Mama is fat”. Kimmey took this in stride and decided to teach her children a lesson. When they got home, she invited the kids for a talk. “Truth be told, I am not fat and no one is fat.
What I have is fat on my body.” Kimmey told her children. “The fat keeps our muscles and bones strong by providing them with energy. Listen carefully, fat is not a bad word in our house, but it is not something you go calling people out there.”

Kimmey was determined to make sure that her kids are the most affable in their community. “Our responsibility is to be the most positive and accepting people in our community,” she told her children. Below is an excerpt of her conversation with the kids as shared on Instagram. It got more than 32K likes.

Me: What did you say about me?
Her: I said you were fat. Mama, I am sorry.
Me: Let’s talk about it. The truth is, I am not fat. No one is fat. It is not something you can be. But I do have fat. We all have fat. It protects our muscles and bones and keeps our bodies going by providing us energy. Do you have fat?
Her: Yes I have some on my tummy.
Me: Yes…so do I and so does your brother.
Her Brother: I don’t have any fat. I’m the skinniest. I only have muscles.
Me: Actually, everyone in the world has fat, we just have different amount of fat on our bodies.
Her Brother: I have some fat to protect my muscles, but you have more than me.
Me: Yes I do. Some people have more than others but that does not mean one person is better than the other. Do you both understand?
Her: Yes. I shouldn’t say someone is fat because you can’t be just fat because everyone has fat and it’s ok to have different fat
Me: That’s right
Them: Can we go back to the pool now?
Me: No
Some of the reactions that she got were supportive:
Alexis Marie: This is an amazing idea. Don’t teach kids to shame others or themselves.
Chelsea Wright: I thinks she has a point. Yes, people should be more active and want to live healthier lives but some people just can’t seem to lose their weight no matter what they do. The idea that all fat people are lazy and over indulge is not true.
However, others were not supportive:
Charlene Liles: This mother obviously doesn’t care about her health and not her daughter’s. She was probably repeating something that someone said to her. Sad!
Ophelia Poppy: Whoa! No, that amount of fat doesn’t protect anything. It can actually be harmful to your organs, arteries and overall health.
