To become a part of the Queen’s Guard, one has to show proof of exemplary service. It is only after this that a soldier can be admitted into the Queen’s Guard. It is considered one of the most prestigious positions in the Royal Army.

The current head of the royal family, Queen Elizabeth, also happens to be the head of state to all the countries in the commonwealth such Australia, Canada, and Barbados. The Queen’s Guard has soldiers from those countries.

Year 2017 is a special year for Canada. The country is celebrating her 150th birthday. To show respect to the head of state, the country has given her the honor of commanding one of their army infantries – the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry Battalion.

The gesture was not supposed to be a big deal but it ended up raising a lot of hullabaloo as the guard’s 500 year history was broken when Captain Megan Coutu became the head of the Battalion’s fighting force. She is the first female captain of the Queen’s Guard.

Apparently, it was just in July 2016 that women were allowed to even fight in close combat in the United Kingdom. To make captain of the Queen’s Guard a year later is a big deal for Megan and other women in the military. It is marks the first step towards modernizing the British military.
