That dogs are loyal is not in dispute. However, the way we define this loyalty is towards humans and not to each other. Surprise surprise, dogs bond with other pups, become best of buddies, which is closest to what humans call “soul mates”.

In an effort to demonstrate just how close dogs can get, this animal shelter has rescued a dog couple to preserve the bond.

Their names, Royal and Regal. And no, they are not your ordinary dogs. They were found on Taiwanese streets and have become inseparable then.

Despite having no home, the dog couple went ahead and started a family with 6 puppies. During this time, they lived on a building on construction but upon its completion, they had to find a new home.

When they realized that the dogs would be homeless, the workers on the site contacted Mary Choi of the Mary’s Doggies. This rescue center has between 50 and 100 dogs. The shelter is always full but Mary knew she had to do something about the dog family.

The workers were either going to chase away the family or call in the kill shelter. Mary would hear none of this. She would never let a dog family suffer like this. So she went to the site.

The initial plan was to get the puppies to the rescue center, but when she saw the bond, she couldn’t allow their separation.

“The mother dog, Regal, looked after her 6 puppies, and the father, Royal, stuck by the mother no matter what. The two adults were so sweet and caring for their puppies. They were inseparable,” says Mary.

Mary did her best to keep the puppies but deep down in her heart, she knew that the puppies would have to be adopted individually.
Eventually, the pups started getting adopted and it became apparent that separating the mommy and daddy dog was going to be devastating to their socialization.

Royal would refuse to eat whenever when he was kept in a separate kennel from Regal.

This prompted Mary to frantically start to look for a loving home for the both with no luck.

In Taiwan, it is very hard to find a home for a big dog, it is nearly impossible to get a home for two big dogs.

After she discovered that she was not going to be successful to get a home for the two dogs, she sort help from Etobicoke Humane Society in Ontario, Canada. As fate would have it, the society agreed to help and so shipped the dogs to Canada where they stood a better chance to get adopted together.

Despite not having found a home, the dogs were still together and Royal had started to eat the moment Regal was with him.

“It was clear to all those concerned that their connection was deep and we were going to do a disservice to them if we separated them,” says Larisa Duravetz.

As they wait to get adopted, the dog couple has found a lot of favor with their caretakers.

A good example of the good care is the frequent home visits that the adoption coordinator, Larisa Duravetz frequently gives the dogs. This has helped them get acquainted with family life.

Royal and Regal are the perfect examples of loyalty between dogs. They have humungous hearts that make them the envy of the humans taking care of them.
