Josephine de Beauharnais was born on the French colonial island of Martinique in the Caribbean. Napoleon was also born on an island that was colonized by the French known as Corsica. The two of them seemed to share this striking similarity that would soon start off a passionate love affair.

However, in just that same letter, he then ends the note with quite the story of love! “I hope before long to crush you in my arms and cover you with a million kisses burning as though beneath the equator.” Seems as though Napoleon had quite conflicting feelings…

I shall be alone and far, far away. But you are coming, aren’t you? You are going to be here beside me, in my arms, on my breast, on my mouth? Take wing and come, come … A kiss on your heart, and one much lower down, much lower!” It seems that this is the equivalent of dirty texting back in the 18th century…

Believe me it is not in my power to have a single thought which is not of thee, or a wish I could not reveal to thee.” It seems that Napoleon was definitely the obsessive type of husband. I write you, me beloved one, very often, and you write very little. You are wicked and naughty, very naughty, as much as you are fickle. It is unfaithful so to deceive a poor husband, a tender lover!” It seems that Napoleon was definitely the jealous type and was in need of constant reassurance… Not exactly what you’d expect from an emperor.

It seems that Napoleon was also quite lost without Josephine beside him as he writes, “Without his Josephine, without the assurance of her love, what is left him upon earth? What can he do?” This is coming from a man that was in total control of Europe at the time.

It seems that Josephine didn’t like writing much back to Napoleon. At one point he loses his cool and let’s Josephine know that he doesn’t appreciate her lack of care. “You don’t write to me at all; you don’t love your husband; you know how happy your letters make him, and you don’t write him six lines of nonsense…

Forgive me, love of my life, my soul is racked by conflicting forces. My heart obsessed by you, is full of fears which prostrate me with misery… I am distressed not to be calling you by name. I shall wait for you to write it,” he wrote.

3. Divorce


It seems that despite all of the hot back and forth, the couple’s marriage didn’t survive. In fact, the two of them eventually got divorced in late 1809. When Napoleon announced the divorce to Josephine, she apparently started to scream and collapsed onto the floor.

2. France’s Benefit

Napoleon eventually explained that the reason he chose to get a divorce from Josephine was because she couldn’t bear him any children. Napoleon needed an heir to to his throne and he explained that the divorce was for France’s benefit.
