Bringing your newborn baby home is an exciting moment for any new parents. However, when one mother in Moldova brought her new daughter home, it was far from a magical moment. The mother, however, just chalked it up to some mild colic. However, she had no idea that her newborn daughter’s initial misery was going to unwrap a story that would change their lives forever.
20. New Baby
Vera Lashtur and her husband, Nikolay, welcomed a new baby into the world in March 1978. They named their newborn daughter Tatyana and although they should have been happy, Vera felt like something was wrong. No matter what she did she couldn’t shake off an odd feeling that she had.
19. Miserable Baby
Although all babies cry, Vera could tell that her new daughter Tatyana was absolutely miserable. The baby refused to stop crying and anytime Vera would try to feed her daughter the baby would put up a fight. Even though things weren’t starting off well, Vera hoped that the baby would outgrow this stage.
18. Growing Up
However, as Tatyana began to grow older she only became more moodier and upset. Vera just couldn’t understand why her daughter was like this. Soon, however, Vera would learn a huge secret that would explain her daughter’s strange behavior.
Throughout the neighborhood, many of Vera and Nikolay’s neighbors would whisper about Tatyana. In fact, there was a huge rumor going around about the little girl. Even Vera’s family began to speak of the rumors and bought it up to her. When Vera heard it, however, she refused to believe it.
The whispers soon reached Vera’s ears and she couldn’t believe what people were saying. It seems that many people believed that Tatyana wasn’t really the couple’s child. In fact, many people believe that the couple took home the wrong baby. Both Vera and Nikolay thought the rumor was preposterous.
15. Leaving Moldova
Finally, in 1999, the family was planning to leave Moldova to start a new life in the United States. However, it was at this point that one of the couple’s neighbors decided to speak to Vera and Nikolay. It seems that she had something very important to tell them.
14. Eerie Similarities
The neighbor came over to Vera and Nikolay with a story about another baby that was born in the hospital around the same time as Tatyana. It seems that this baby had also been miserable throughout its childhood and cried a lot. The similarities weirded out the couple…
13. Having Problems
“She knew us,” Nikolay said of the neighbor in a November 2017 interview with Inside Edition. “She knew the other family, and she knew that both kids were having problems after the hospital. As they grew up, I guess she could tell that the other kid looked a lot like our family, and the kid that we had looked like their family.”
12. Looking For Answers
Vera and Nikolay were unable to look for the family before they left for the United States. However, as they made their way into the U.S. they began to search for answers to this great mystery. Every time they visited Moldova they tried to piece together the clues. (In the photo above, Tatyana is the second from the right).
11. Major Breakthrough
Then in August 2017, the family had a major breakthrough with some information. Through the use of social media, Tatyana and her younger sister Victoria were able to track down the other child from their neighbor’s story. The girl’s name was Valentina Suman and Tatyana and her sister were able to find her on social media.
10. Suspicions Confirmed
Tatyana then connected with Valentina through social media and reached out to her. All of their original suspicions had been correct. Valentina and Tatyana had been born at the exact same time in the exact same hospital. Valentina then sent Tatyana some photos of herself and she looked exactly like Vera and Nikolay!

9. A Brother’s Reaction
Vera’s son Anatoliy remembers the day he was shown a photograph of Valentina as a baby. “My mom asked me to come over. She opened a laptop with two baby photos and pointed at one, asking me to tell her who it was.” He added, “I told her it was Victoria, my younger sister. It looked just like her.”

8. Same Looks
“We knew in our hearts that [Valentina] was our sister based on the pictures. She looked exactly like my younger sister,” added Anatoliy. Above is a photo of Victoria who looks exactly like Valentina! The resemblance is uncanny.
7. DNA Test
Finally, in October 2017, both families were invited to appear on a Russian TV show to talk about their story. The show gave the two woman a DNA test to see if the rumors were all true. It seems that after all of the mysteries they finally found out the truth.
6. Emotional Moment
The DNA test had proven that the two girls had been switched at birth. “It was the first time we had the opportunity to see our birth sister Valentina and hug each other, cry together,” Anatoliy said. “Also, that day was the first time my sister Tatyana had the opportunity to hug and cry with her birth family.”
5. Accidental Swap
So how exactly could this have happened? Well, on March 27, 1978, their mothers were sharing a hospital room and the girls had been taken away to be bathed. When the nurses brought them back they put them in the wrong bed. No one could tell the difference since the babies were both so small and didn’t have distinguished features yet.
Ever since she has been reunited with Vera and Nikolay, Valentina has been a serious effort to get to know her birth parents. She visits them often and her own children visit them as well. She even became a surrogate mother to one of her nephews.
3. Two Families
Although they easily could have, neither one of the families wanted to sue the hospital for their negligence. The families were just both incredibly happy to be reunited with their daughters. Now they have not one family, but two big amazing families.
2. Wonderful Relationship
Anatoliy has gone above and beyond to get closer to his sister. He has been working hard to help her move to the United States so that she can be closer to her biological family. However, has this changed his relationship with Tatyana?!
1. No Change
“I talked to her, and I told her [that] nothing changes between us. The only difference is [that] I gain a sister. We are brother and sister. We love her, and nothing is ever going to change that,” Anatoliy explained. It seems to be quite a happy ending for both families involved!
