These pigs make the saying “casting pearls before swine” sound so old school. Apparently pigs in this modern age have no use for expensive jewelry, especially if they got a luxury island in the Bahamas all for their own.
Big Major Cay, more popularly known as Pig Beach or Pig Island, is home to around 20 pigs that have acquired the taste of the luxurious tropical life. They lounge about in fine, white sand, under the shade of billowing palms. On sunny days they rush to the clear blue waters for a swim for relaxation’s sake—but mostly so that they could grab a bite or two from tourist yachts which regularly pass by.
No one knows for sure where these pigs came from or why they were there, but theories abound. Some presume they were left there by some sailors who intended to return and cook them but never did, while others think that they were survivors of a shipwreck that were able to swim to shore.
Another theory is that they’re just a business scheme to attract more tourists to the islands—but this be true or not, these swimming swine are definitely bringing more and more curious vacationers to the Bahamas.
