The statue of Little Mermaid of Copenhagen fascinates the visitors not only due to the legend attributed to it but also its relatively small size which is beyond their expectations. It is located only a few minutes’ walk from the cruise ship pier in Copenhagen. Sitting on the rock near the beach , this Little Mermaid statue is the enticing symbol of the Danish capital. Suffered from numerous vandalism attempts The original statue is retained by the sculptor’s heirs in an unknown place and the Little Mermaid displayed in Copenhagen harbor is a copy.
The Little Mermaid statue was actually a gift to Copenhagen and it was sculpted by Edvard Erichsen following the trend of sculpting the famous figures at that time. It was unveiled in 1913 at Langelinje and presented to the authorities of Copenhagen by The Carlsberg Breweries. The Little Mermaid was sculpted with the inspiration from the fairy tale by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen in which a young mermaid fell in love with a prince and she used to appear on the shore to search for her beloved.
The Little Mermaid statue is only 1.25 metres high and weighs around 175 kg. Sometimes the Little Mermaid statue of Copenhagen is confused with the Pania of the Reef statue on the beachfront at Napier in New Zealand due to the similarities, however both are different ones. There are many copies of this fabulous statue like in Solvang, California; Kimballton, Iowa; Piatra Neamt, Romania and in Weihai, China outside the old Danish consulate. One of its copy is buried with the dead body of the Danish-American entertainer Victor Borge. One of its copy is kept in the Family Mausoleum Development of the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Texas.
The statue’s birthday is organized in different parts of Denmark every year on August 23. The sculpture of the Little Mermaid picturing with painful look at the waters, after getting legs and come on land but never succeeded in marrying the prince attracts the major number of tourists coming to Copenhagen throughout the year.
