Christ the Redeemer

Rio de Janeiro along with all of its adorable sites is famous in the world for the famous statue of Jesus Christ, Christ the Redeemer which is deemed to be the second largest Art Deco statue of the world. It was designed by Heitor da Silva and carved by French sculptor Paul Landowski. After five years of hard work, it finally broke the ice in 1931. Christ the Redeemer towers high above the city of Rio de Janeiro taking the whole world in its arms just to give a permanent hug to the viewer.

The statue stands 130 ft (39.5 meter ) tall ,on a 31-ft (9.5 meter )pedestal, weighs 700 tons, and is visible night and day from most of the city’s neighborhoods. It is located at the peak of the 700-metre (2,300 ft) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city.In 2007, the Christ Redeemer statue was named as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. A chapel is also located at the base of the statue. The chapel can accommodate around 150 people and the interior is decorated with scenes from the bible. There are also rich paintings of Christ and Mary. The chapel was consecrated by the archbishop of Rio, Cardinal Eusebio Oscar Scheid in the year 2006.

Right from the top the view of Rio is just awesome. The fantastic panorama of Copacabana , Ipnema , Leblon , Botancial Gardens , the Jockey Club and the Lagoon can be sighted from there. At night the scenery becomes flashing with millions of lights brightening the city. The construction of Christ the Redeemer is still considered one of the hallmarks of the Brazilian construction styles. People from all around the world specially pay their visit to this religious site during Easter and Christmas.
