In this post we would like to present to your attention an interview with a really interesting and creative person. Giulia Baldini was born in Rome in 1986. She always had the distinguished interest to the world of graphic arts and design. In 2008 she joined Academy of Art and New Technology in Rome and had the course in graphic design. In 2009 she becomes advertising and graphic designer and in 2010 graphic visualizer. In 2011 she becomes assistant art director.
Hello Giulia, please tell us a bit about your background. What brought you to design? What creative fields are you involved in?
Hi, I am a web and multimedia designer. My interest in graphic design was instantaneous. Just after finishing my studies in high school I quickly realized that this was my way.
What influenced you to choose this career?
Since I was a little girl I loved everything about graphics: looking at the kinds and the shapes of fonts, reading various design blogs and learning new techniques!
Three years ago I joined the Accademia delle Arti e Nuove Tecnologie (a graphic design school here in Rome) and then I realized that this is the place where I belong!
Are you self-taught or did you study design and graphics?
I started on my own, but when I’ve realized that this was my way I joined the academy where I began to appreciate this world more.
Except the regular galleries and blogs, from what or where do you get the inspiration?
I take my inspiration from everything I see and the things that attract my attention are: pictures, signs, particular situations. Almost everything is a source of inspiration. I use to start from the details and then re-create that atmosphere and feelings that I have in my mind through the design.
What is your favorite type of design work? And, what has been your favorite project?
My perfect job is creating brand identity and web layouts. I really love typography and all of its applications. The job that gave me a lot of satisfaction was a project for my academy: creating a logo and related images for FAO.
How do you think, what are the most important skills for a designer to have/develop?
The most important skills for a good designer are: attention to details, constant desire to create new things, curiosity, design and harmony.
Can you name at least 3 books that you’ve found beneficial to your growth as a designer?
3 books that should be absolutely read are: “The Elements of Typographic Style” after Robert Bringhurst, “Thinking with Type” by Ellen Lupton and “Making and breaking the grid” and of course as many as possible! Everything could be useful!
What are your favorite tools to use when designing a project? Why are they your favorite tools?
Paper and pencils above all. Every projects start from here.
How has your passion for graphic design and illustration helped you in web design projects?
Illustration helps me a lot during design above all for synthesize concepts sometime really hard to explain. Communication is the foundation of everything.
What advice would you give to starting web designers?
To explore every single page of the web, look closely at the structures of the sites, the organization, how things are laid out and try to reproduce what you have seen re-interpreting in your own way.
Thank you Giulia, it was a real pleasure to get to know you better. We hope the same it would be for our readers. We wish you a lot of inspiration in your future projects and to conquer all new tops in design.
