About 100 people received injuries and of them 33 were in serious condition and admitted to different hospitals in Manipur, official sources said. There were no immediate reports of casualties in India, but an AFP correspondent in Guwahati, the main commercial city of the mineral-rich state of Assam, said residents there were “in a state of shock” after being woken by the shaking.

Northeast India is considered to be the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world. Gen. Anurag Gupta of the Indian National Disaster Management Authority, one six-story building had collapsed in Imphal. The region is dotted with small houses with few tall buildings.

Some people were injured in each of these states while some buildings developed cracks, official said.

Almost 90 members of the National Disaster Response Force have left to check on remote areas, police said.

The intensity of the quake was strongly felt in neighbouring country Bangladesh, forcing thousands of people to rush out of their home in panic.

Report said rescue workers in Imphal used hand-held drilling machines to clear rubble from the ruins of a six-storey building under construction, the site of the heaviest damage in the city.

Residents of Imphal said people fled their homes and power and telecoms links were down in the remote region.

“Many people were seen coming out of their homes in panic”, said local resident Rabin Dev.

The deaths occurred from building collapses in Imphal town, the capital of Manipur.
