Louis area residents face massive cleanup, recovery

There were growing fears too for residents in southern IL, where the rising Mississippi River reportedly topped a levee, putting several towns and rural communities at risk.

The Mississippi River’s floodwaters are moving south, causing more levee failures and more severe damage.

In St. Mary, Missouri, a town of about 360 residents 50 miles south of St. Louis, neighbors and volunteers placed sandbags around homes after a small agricultural levee broke.

In Memphis, Tennessee, the MS was expected to crest Friday well below record levels.

Most of emergency personnel, including the National Guard, were involved in debris after the floods that were blamed on at least 24 deaths in Missouri and IL – with 15 fatalities occurring in Missouri, a spokesman for that state’s governor said Saturday night.

Tatum said many more homes were affected by a flood in 2011 and expressed frustration that already approved buy-outs of more than 100 homes and small businesses related to that flooding have been stalled by an IL state budget impasse.

Authorities have identified another of the 22 people killed in the winter flood in the Midwest. Searchers were still looking Friday for five missing people – two teenagers in IL, two men in Missouri and one man in Oklahoma.

Two wastewater-treatment plants were so damaged by floodwaters that raw sewage spewed into the river. Gov. Bruce Rauner encouraged people to respect requests to evacuate. Minor flooding along the Ohio River affects Owensboro and Paducah, Kentucky, and the crest isn’t expected until Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for the Cumberland River at Dover, Tenn., through Monday evening.

As the runoff from the deluges that hit around Christmas gathered in rivers that empty into the Mississippi River, downstream gauges are predicting potential flooding for areas in southern Missouri and Illinois, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana.

In Texas, thousands of cows died in a surprise blizzard, while the milk supply dried up for thousands of others went unmilked for several days, reducing their production for months to come, dairy officials told CNN.

With the Mississippi River reaching high stages, feeder rivers could be expected to see some backup flooding, the NWS said.

In Wickliffe, Ky., also on the Mississippi River, residents were filling sandbags to protect homes from flooding.
