Gunmen attempt to storm Indian air base

Indian security officials immediately blamed militants from Pakistan, casting fresh doubt on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial efforts to engage his rival neighbor in peace talks.

Intelligence officials said that the terrorists involved in the fidayeen attack could be from Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Muhammed (JeM). In a major security breach, terrorists entered a frontline Indian Air Force (IAF) base near this town in northern Punjab early Saturday and engaged the security forces in a fierce gunfight. We want good relations with not just Pakistan but with all our neighbours.

The operation at Pathankot airbase has finally concluded on Saturday after 14 hours of the terrorist attack. Shots could also be heard from inside the base.

Indian security officials, speaking to news media, said that the suspected attackers hijacked the vehicle of a senior police official along a highway outside Pathankot early Saturday. At least two Indian soldiers were also killed in the ongoing violence.

At the time of the filing of this report, four of the five militants have been killed.

The attack began at around 3 a.m., when a group of gunmen entered the section of the base where the living quarters are located, the defense ministry said. “They are heavily armed and the attack is aimed to cause maximum damage to the equipment at the station but we have been successful so far”, he said.

Police were investigating whether the militants came from the Indian portion of Kashmir or from Pakistan. India regularly accuses Pakistan’s Army of providing covering fire for rebels who infiltrate across the border and then mount attacks in the Indian sector of Kashmir. The two leaders also held an unscheduled meeting at the Paris climate change talks last month.

Ahead of Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan, the national security advisers of both countries had met in Thailand to discuss issues including peace and security, terrorism, the disputed region of Kashmir and ways to maintain peace along the countries’ shared border.
