Shutters look very good, but they can be quite expensive if you have good taste and you don’t settle for an ordinary thing. So, if you don’t have all that money, but you want to have pretty windows and shutters, you can easily make your own. A pair of wood shutters can be built for under $40. All you need is a miter saw, a drill, a hammer drill and some saw horses. Also, you will have to buy a few planks, a few boxes of wood screws and some ornaments if you’re feeling creative.
If you plan on doing your own shutters, you should pick the perfect wood that suits your needs. Take a look at the appended step-by-step guide for further instructions.
Here are some proportions that you might need to follow. Of course, you can change the sizes in order to fit your windows.
This is how the wood should look like before you start working on it. You can choose to use another type of wood if you want. The best bet would be to consult with a retailer before buying any planks or repurposed wood cords.
Be sure to measure everything at least twice before cutting. This way you won’t fail and your shutters will come up perfectly.
Be sure you don’t do any mistakes, so your shutter will be both functional and nice.
Cut your boards carefully and put them together to see if everything is right. Don’t fix them with nails before you check everything twice.
You can also use some other types of nails that will give your shutters a more rustic look. You can find them in all shapes and colors.
These dimensions work on a 45″ tall shutter only. If you want to make a bigger shutter, then you will have to adjust them.
Use clamps to hold all the pieces together. Then flip over the wood shutters and screw them together. This way you don’t see the screw heads on the front side.
Use exterior wood screws so they don’t rust anytime soon. Rainwater can be your worst enemy when it comes to shutters.
Clamps are very helpful as they keep everything in place and you can remove them if something doesn’t look right.
Now you can screw on the back battens to offset the shutters from the wall. This way your windows will be protected.
When it comes to these wood shutters, it looks best to have the right side a mirrored image of the left, just like you see above.
Do a couple of test shots, so you make sure you like which way the Z bar is oriented. You can turn them around if you like them better.
Everything is almost done, so you can go on and paint the boards.
If you want to keep it simple, we recommend you to just add a layer or two of lacquer. It will look classy, I promise.
Don’t forget to paint them in order to match the rest of the house. This dark grey color looks amazing and it goes perfectly with the white window frame.
Don’t throw away your old shutters because you have there is quite a possibility to turn them into something useful and beautiful at the same time.
