Speakers convert electrical energy into sound energy using magnets. What you surely didn’t know is that you only need a few things to make your own simple speakers. How cool would it be to be able to play your music through some handmade speakers?

Take a look at these pictures to see what you need in order to make this simple DIY project; how much time it would take and how to setup everything in your man cave. All you need is your tool box, a few materials and a little bit of initiative.

All you need in order to make a speaker is copper wire, packing tape, and a strong magnet. You should also use a box or a cup because it will amplify the sound.

Wrap the copper wire around the magnet a few times.  Make sure you leave several feet of wire unwrapped on both sides of the magnet. Tape this coil onto the bottom of your tupperware, but make sure that you don’t cover the magnet.

Place the magnet on top of the two coils. Don’t worry too much about touching the wire because it will not stay in your way.

Grab both copper wires to an AUX cord. Wrap one end of the wire around the top of the metal and the other around the bottom.

It’s time to test it! Try using a stronger magnet if you want to and keep your coils tighter. Try different types of songs and play it loud enough until it vibrates.

If you want to have a real speaker, like the ones you buy from a store, keep in mind the basics of speaker technology have not really changed since 1924. All speakers contain a few basic components: a driver that transforms an electrical signal into sound, crossovers that take complex electrical signals and break them up into smaller parts, isolating bass, treble, mid-range frequencies and a cabinet, which is  the shell of a speaker.

The easiest way is to buy a speaker kit, so you will have everything that you need without having to improvise.

Media Source

Solder the crossover together by following the provided crossover pattern. You will need a soldering iron, hot glue and a pattern. Make sure that your crossover works correctly.

Cut, stain and assemble your cabinet, which can be simple or as complicated as you want it to be.

Media Source

Install your drivers and crossover. The drivers should fit into the holes you cut on the front of the cabinet.

Fill the rest of your speaker with acoustic stuffing, which is a specially designed fabric that is meant to dampen sound inside the speaker so that you don’t hear weird vibrations or echoes.

If you don’t want to loose a lot of time, you can still make a very easy project like this one. Enjoy the music!
