Nothing can replace mother’s love and care and every living animal deserves and needs it. It all begun when four baby hedgehogs lost their mother in a lawn-mowing accident. The little hedgehogs were desperate for milk and affection as well as care and a mother’s hug. Who could imagine where they found all they needed?

19. Refused Syringe

The little hedgehogs refused milk from a syringe, a bottle and a saucer for two days and their future seemed uncertain. At night the little babies had a heating pad to stimulate digestion and simulate their mother’s warmth but nothing seemed to be helping.It all changed when Sonya, a ginger cat made her appearance.

18. Sonya The Cat

Sonya is a ginger cat from central Russia who had just gave birth to her own kitten and because of that there was plenty of milk to be shared. The little hedgehogs seemed to be interested in her and tried to approached her. It was there that she fell in love with them and offered to be a surrogate mum providing everything she could unconditionally.

Sonya immediately adopted the hoglets and made a commitment to raise them alongside her own kitten. “She treats them, exactly as if they were her own, allowing them to suckle to their hearts content and then snuggle up to sleep in her fur when they’re full”.

Sonya also welcomed them to sleep with her and her kitten, providing them with warmth, keeping them from freezing in the night. It was obvious by the first nights that the little babies loved snuggling with Sonya as if she were their own mother. But Sonya didn’t offer them just that. Milk from mammals doesn’t differ a lot between species and is still considered a better option than bottle feeding, giving everything that a newborn mammals needs.

After some time the hoglets grew up and started to be less depended on their mother. They started to be able to eat normal food (of course hedgehog food) and begun to explore the world. Did Sonya’s job as a mother ended there? Of course not and you’ll never guess what she felt like doing.

While the hedgehogs started to explore the world they became a little naughty. Sonya seemed to be the kind of strict mother wanting her babies to be well-behaved. She used to hiss them when they tried to prick her and look for them when they were missing for a while.

The hoglets never forgot what she did for them though. It seemed like they knew that she literally saved their lives that fateful day when she decided to adopt them. But did the little hedgehogs get along with her baby kitten?

As it was stated previously, Sonya had a lot of milk because she had just given birth to her own kitten. There was plenty of milk to be spared and everyone was happy, there was no room for arguments and conflicts.

The now six-member of the family seemed to get along well and qualified to be considered a real family despite its weird composition. The little kitten was excited to have such special brothers and sisters.

Of course, the kitten wasn’t ready to digest the idea that these four hoglets will be in its family. It was distant and scared at first as it was expected but its heart was warmed quickly and it welcomed the new family member with love and care.

They were all getting along! When Sonya was away the five of them seemed to keep company to each other and cuddle together to keep themselves warm.

It seems to be common practice for mother cats to be willing to adopt small mammals. There is a reported case of a Tiger named Sai Mai from Thailand who adopted three orphaned baby piglets.

As strange as it seems this isn’t the only case a cat has adopted baby hedgehogs. There is this story of a cat named Muska who adopted a group of eight orphaned hedgehogs just like Sonya.

Despite the fact that this behavior between mammals is common, it is not the rule. It wasn’t easy for Sonya to welcome those baby hoglets in her family and treat them as real family members but love and affection overcame every second-thought.
