Sitting Jammu & Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed dies

His daughter Mehbooba Mufti is set to be the next chief minister of the state.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed breathed his last on Thursday at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, the institute management said.

He was detected with sepsis, decreased blood counts and pneumonia.

Since then, he was in the Intensive Care Unit of AIIMS and his platelets dropped dangerously low.

He was put on ventilator yesterday after his condition had started to deteriorate, triggering speculation that his daughter and PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti will take over as the next chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mufti Mohammad had on November 13 hinted that Mehbooba Mufti could become the next chief minister as she was better connected with the people and deserves to be chief minister.

He founded the PDP in 1999.

Born on January 12, 1936 in Bijbehara in Anantnag district of the state, Sayeed is an alumnus of SP College in Srinagar and Aligarh Muslim University from where he obtained a degree in Law and Arab History respectively.

Ms Mufti, who is the president of the PDP in Indian-administered Kashmir, had helped lead her father’s party to victory in a fiercely fought state assembly election a year ago. “So she deserves it (to be chief minister)”, Mufti said.
