Missing 18 minutes: FBI seeks public’s help in California massacre

Fourteen people died in the rampage and the suspects were killed in a shootout with police.

David Bowdich, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, speaks at a news conference at the San Bernardino Police Department on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016.

“We have accounted for three hours and 42 minutes of time”, he said.

Bowdich also reiterated that there’s no evidence the attack was directed from overseas, but he said nothing has been ruled out. Most people who were involved were county employees attending a holiday party.

“There’s no rhyme or reason that we can make for it yet, however, again, that 18 minutes is critical”, Bowdich said.

Bowdich said investigators want to leave no stone unturned and hope to find out if the assailants contacted anyone or stopped anywhere between 12:59 p.m. and 1:17 p.m. that day.

The man accused of buying two rifles used in last month’s deadly San Bernardino attack pleaded not guilty Wednesday in a Southern California courtroom.

The FBI has declined to say where Farook went after he left.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents spent 10 days questioning Marquez, who, according to the criminal complaint, told them he and Farook, a longtime friend and former neighbor of his, hatched a plan in late 2011 to throw pipe bombs into the cafeteria at Riverside Community College from an elevated position on the second floor in order to maximize casualties, then flee and commit another attack elsewhere.

While the conspiracy charge doesn’t specifically accuse Marquez of having any advanced knowledge of the San Bernardino plot, FBI investigators said he and Farook did acquire the firearms with the intent of carrying out some type of violent attack – which they allegedly began discussing in 2011.

Marquez frequently bought guns and other weapons for Farook and took trips to gun ranges to train for their terrorist attacks.

Farook married Tashifeen Malik in November 2014, which was considered as a fraudulent marriage due to the fact that Malik and Farook were extended family members. They briefly pulled over near Seccombe Lake and in a parking lot near the Inland Regional Center.

At 11:14, Malik’s Facebook page announced her allegiance to the leader of ISIS.
