Premier League milestone as Rooney ends goal drought

“Against Swansea, United’s link-up play was a lot better”.

Van Gaal started with a typical 4-2-3-1 formation at Old Trafford, but ended the game using a tactic more resembling 3-1-4-1-1 by full-time.

Swansea had won the last three meetings against United by a 2-1 scoreline but the hosts soon restored their lead as Martial burst away down the left and Rooney turned in his low cross with a clever flick.

Young has made two assists in 14 Premier League games so far this season.

Rooney climbed above former United forward Andy Cole with 188 goals following his instinctive finish, behind only Alan Shearer who netted 260 times for Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United.

“We scored two fantastic goals and you only win by scoring goals but, as a team, our performance in the first half was better”, he said. “I think, especially in the last couple of games, we’ve fought hard and we need to kick on like we did today”.

United defeated Swansea 2-1 yesterday, with Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney both on the scoresheet. The Dutchman has been criticised for playing a style that curbs the attacking instincts of his players and it seems like the manager is switching to a more attacking style of play, which is clearly paying dividends.

After dominating the early stages, Van Gaal’s men allowed Swansea back into the match, with Morgan Schneiderlin surviving penalty claims for an alleged handball.

“We have created chances in the first half but we didn’t score and you have to score out of the chances”.

Martial set up Rooney’s fine victor after opening the scoring with an emphatic header, and Smalling has hailed the attacking qualities of the young France global.

But the same report stated that despite the availability of Jose Mourinho, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and the owners the Glazer Family, are determined to stick with Van Gaal for now and Giggs for the future. But after Gylfi Sigurdsson had brought Swansea level, Rooney’s deft back-heel flick from Martial’s cut-back brought him back level with the French youngster.

There were a few boos at half-time when United failed to score in the first half for the ninth home game in succession, but despite registering only three shots on target and playing slowly, Van Gaal was happy with his team’s performance before the break.

Van Gaal hopes this win will kick-start United’s season too.

Van Gaal revealed the system – a change from the back four he used in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea – was devised after conversations with his players.

The Dutch tactician also clarified the reason behind midfielder Ander Herrera’s late substitution, after the Spaniard came off with just minutes remaining in the game.
