Explosion rocks Kabul city on first day of the new year

An explosion shook central Kabul Friday, part of a deadly attack on a restaurant popular with expats and wealthy Afghans, officials said. “Apparently a restaurant has been attacked”, interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. Police had detained one suspect and were preparing to conduct a sweep of the restaurant, Sediqqi said.

VICE News is covering the ongoing fight for the future of Afghanistan. He stated he thought perhaps one of many “guesthouses in the area belonging to the foreigners” was the target.

In a similar attack, at least six US military personnel were killed and several others wounded late December after a suicide bomber targeted the troops on foot patrol near Bagram, the biggest USA air base in Afghanistan.

A moderately heavy explosion has hit the Afghan capital Kabul.

Claiming to have killed and injured many, the Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid took to social media to promote the organization’s activities.

“The blast went off near French restaurant Le Jardin, frequented by foreigners in Qala-e-Fatullah Khan locality”. On Jan. 11, officials from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and the United States are scheduled to meet in Islamabad to begin discussing solutions to the conflict.

The incident came nearly two years after a suicide attack on a Lebanese restaurant in the city killed 21 people, including 13 expatriates, and prompted many foreign organisations to withdraw staff or place tight restrictions on their movements.
