ULFA leader Anup Chetia awaiting release

On other hand the pro-talk ULFA group said that, Anup Chetia’s release will boost the ongoing peace talk with the central government.

“Many quarters have suspected that as in 1992 we will not continue with the talks with the government”.

“I will be a part of the ongoing tripartite talks among the Ulfa, central and Assam governments to resolve the insurgency issue”, he said.

“During my 17 years in jail in Bangladesh, I had no contact with Paresh Baruah”.

ULFA founder Anup Chetia who was arrested in Bangladesh in 1997 and had been languishing in different Bangladeshi jails since then at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Kamrup in Guwahati on Nov 18, 2015.

Chetia was charged with illegally entering Bangladesh using a forged passport, possession of illegal foreign currency from 16 different countries and illegal possession of arms. On his arrival in New Delhi, the CBI arrested him for a murder that took place in 1988.

Mr Chetia, however, is not allowed to leave Assam without the court’s permission.

“I have spent half my life while fighting for the cause of Assam and its people”. He was released from the Guwahati Central Jail, just hours after he was granted bail in the last of the four cases registered against him.

A local TADA court in Guwahati on Thursday granted bail to Anup Chetia after the top ULFA leader was produced before it in connection with two old cases pending against him.

He obtained bail in the last of the four cases (CBI case) yesterday.
