In Chicago, Protests And Calls For The Mayor To Resign

Hunter called a news conference Friday to speak for McDonald’s family, who has largely tried to remain out of the spotlight since the release of the video last month set off weeks of protests. The police account says that the officers feared that Cedrick had been reaching for a gun, but the object turned out to be a cellphone case. “I do not vote in Chicago, and therefore I’m not going to weigh in on that”. About 1,000 protestors calling for the resignation of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel marched by way of downtown blocking traffic and infrequently having temporary clashes with cops officers.

Several prominent Chicago pastors have rejected Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s “olive branch of peace” and are demanding that his administration release yet another video in which a white police officer fatally shot a black teenager. A few activists with them wore T-shirts that read “Rahm Failed Us”.

Garry McCarthy was forced to resign last week in the wake of the release of a video showing the 2014 shooting death of a black teenager by a white police officer.

“Dreads doesn’t mean terrible”, said Hunter, referring to McDonald’s hair style.

Chicago musician Chance the Rapper made a reference to the police shooting of Laquan McDonald during a performance on “Saturday Night Live”.

Hunter described McDonald, 17, as a big, loving “jokester”, not a gangster, and said police should not judge young black men by their appearance.

“When he saw you he greeted you with a hug”, the uncle said. Records show he was taken from his house at the age of 3 because the state’s Department of Children and Family Services determined his mother didn’t provide proper supervision.

On Thursday, dozens of medical students from the University of Chicago, Rush University and other area schools staged a “die-in” protest at Chicago City Hall to remember the young victim. Robbins spoke after the McDonald family and its supporters held a news conference.

They are also expected to call for the resignation of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

Emanuel’s spokeswoman Shannon Breymaier was included in an email chain wondering whether the city would release the controversial footage, NBC Chicago reported.

Emanuel, meanwhile, apologized for the Laquan McDonald shooting on Wednesday, the same day a bill was introduced in the state legislature that would create a process to recall Chicago’s mayor. Hunter says they will thank the public for demanding justice and change.
