Aam Aadmi Party questions timing of demolition drive in Delhi

On Monday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met the displaced people and vowed to fight for their rights.

“Perhaps his party hasn’t told him that Railways come under the Central government and not Delhi government”, he said. Parliamentarians of the Trinamool Congress joined AAP in the protest.

Slamming Rahul for taking mileage over the incident, AAP said: “Where was Rahul Gandhi for the 48 hours”.

In the meeting, Railway officials told the CM said that there is no rehabilitation scheme before demolition.

Meanwhile, Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay said: “For the past one year the Kejriwal government has done nothing to settle the slum dwellers, though 5,000 houses are ready”. One child is alleged to have died during the demolition.

“Railway officials failed to give a satisfactory response as to why demolition drive was carried out when asked whether it was an emergency project”, sources said.

Media reports said that following the demolition drive carried out by railway authorities in Shakur Basti, almost 500 people were rendered homeless.

Apparently, more than 1200 slum units were demolished by Railway Officials on Sunday in the West Delhi area of Shakurpur Basti which has made thousands of people on roads. Senior standing counsel Rahul Mehra, while appearing for Delhi government, assured HC that “what needs to be done, we will do as we are not shying away from our duty”.

“Call me if they try to break your homes again and I promise I won’t let it happen”.

The Delhi Government yesterday ordered magisterial inquiries into the demolition and also the death of a six month-old child.

“In the mess we did not realize, a heap of clothes fell on her, and she died”, said Mohammad Anwar. “However, the demolition could not be undertaken then because police could not provide assistance then,” Arora said.

The report comes in sharp contrast to Railway minister Suresh Prabhu’s statements in Parliament on Monday, where he defended the demolition saying that the child had died before the drive began and that the encroachers in the slum land had refused to vacate the land despite repeated notices.

The drive, he said, was aimed at “teaching a lesson to Kejriwal”.
