Whether you’re on vacation with your friends or you’re just a wildlife admirer, you always have to consider the unexpected when traveling in areas populated by wild animals. You could encounter them when you’re going camping, hiking, off-roading or even when you’re taking a tour through a natural habitat.
Keep in mind that when walking on animal territory you are considered a threat or even worse, the prey. Here is some information regarding how you can face or avoid these dangerous situations.
When facing a greater and significantly stronger wild animal, it’s better to put your trust in your judgement and reason instead of muscle and force. Being smart is one of your biggest advantages.
When encountering a lion it’s best to keep eye contact with it. Don’t break it, slowly back away and start putting distance between you and the predator. Making eye contact with the lion means letting it know that you’ve spotted it. If the prey knows where the predator is, the lion loses the element of surprise.
Leopards are considered one of the fastest land animals in the world, so they don’t really need the element of surprise when hunting since they can outrun you in a moment. Never make eye contact with a leopard because they see it as a challenge. Try to stay as still as possible and if a leopard notices you make as much noise as you can and throw your arms out to look big and brave.
Even if at first glance elephants may look slow and heavy, when they become angry they will be significantly fast and infuriated. What you can do is to stand your ground and look brave. One obvious sign that you should be in alert is when they flap their ears aggressively and toot.
What is outstanding about the buffalo is that it doesn’t flee from the predators and stands its ground in order to protect the herd. The most important and only advice is to quickly run away when encountering an angry buffalo, they will definitely defeat you in battle, so the only thing you can do is to put as much distance between you two and climb a tree.
The hippo is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. They are responsible for more human deaths than any other animals. What you have to do in order to keep yourself out of danger is not to get between the hippo and its body of water, because it considers this gesture a threat.
These formidable animals usually hunt in packs. Their speed will definitely outrun you so you either fight back or look as intimidating as you can. One upside is that they don’t usually attack people.
Domestic dogs are a different story. Dogs are faster than humans, so outrunning them it’s close to impossible. What you can do is fight back. Clench your hands in fists and try to command the dog as authoritatively as you can without making eye contact. They interpret eye contact as a challenge.
Among all species of sharks, the Great White is the most lethal to humans. It is known that sharks don’t usually attack people, but when they do, here is what you have to know: keep in mind that the most sensitive area of a shark is the nose, so punch as hard as you can.
One of the most successful predators is the crocodile. With a strong bite and fast reflexes, it kills annually an average of 2500 people. If one attacks you from a riverbank, then your only chance of survival is missed. If you see one on land, the chances are it won’t get close to you. However, stay safe and keep your distance.
What you must not do in the situation of a bear attack is: don’t climb trees because they are great climbers, don’t try to outrun it because the bear is obviously faster and don’t start yelling or shouting at it because it will be interpreted as a challenge. What you must do is to appear as calm as you can, extend your arms to look more intimidating and bigger and speak in a low voice.
There are different types of species of snakes, some of them venomous and some of them not. What you should know is that they usually don’t attack people with no reason. When facing a dangerous situation involving a snake it’s better to change your course. If you notice it following you, them stamp on the ground to create vibration that will drive away the snake.
Usually, if a spider attacks or bites you it’s too late to escape from it. However, what you can do is to treat the bite until you reach the nearest hospital. Make sure you wash it with water and soap and apply a cold compress.
When it comes to cougars, it’s almost similar to lions. Don’t stop eye contact, back away slowly without taking your eyes off the animal and try to appear larger than it. If it attacks you, try to fight back with whatever you have.
The moose is considered one of the most dangerous animal you can find in a forest. They are massive animals, with a strong construction and very protective of their territory. However, the moose is not built for speed, so if you encounter one, put as much distance as you can between you and the predator.
The Yellowstone National Park is also known for having bison that attacked the park’s visitors. One important thing to consider is keeping a safe distance. Usually, bison doesn’t try to kill you, but it is just annoyed by the proximity. If it attacks, try to outrun it and climb a tree or hide under something large.
This method is similar when encountering vicious dogs, except wolves hunt in packs. Don’t start running because this might trigger an eventual attack. Shout at the animal to make it back off.
One piece of advice that is very important for your safety is to know your area. Use a field guide and make sure you are informed about your surroundings.
When going on adventures, make sure you are well-equipped. That includes having a survival kit to maximize the chances of a successful experience.
If you’re travelling in an area where you know there might be mountain lions, make sure you keep close a bell or other device to make noise. These kind of noisemakers will keep them away.
In the situation where you encounter a mountain lion and it attacks you, make sure you keep your neck protected. Most predators’ attack in that part of body, being one of the most vulnerable body parts.
If you notice bear cubs approaching you or just in your area of vision, do not get close to them . If you see one cub it means that their mother is somewhere near and a protective mother bear is very dangerous.
One successful strategy when facing an angry bear is to play dead. Assume a still position and keep your breathing in check.
Also, when travelling in areas where you know there might be snakes, make sure you wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts and adequate boots.
