It’s a story about a girl and her car, all of which started off in the good ol’ days when Rockin’ Ramon ended up in a fatal car crash, but miraculously survived to tell the tale. All that was left of Ramon’s 1941 Willy Gasser was the engine; the rest of the car was totaled beyond possible repairs.
The question remained, whether to build a new car or swap an existing car’s engine with Ramon’s ’41 Gasser. After all, they had to continue with the magnificent races that they were so famous for.
As time passed by, Ramon and his crew found 1970 Plymouth Barracuda and the would be infamous driver: Kristen Van Croonenborgh. Rockin’ Ramon actually needed Croonenborgh as a backup girl, but fate had something else in plans for her.
As soon as the Plymouth Barracuda rolled in, and the initial orange paint job was done, Ms. Croonenborgh expressed her desire to drive the car someday.
Since running in high heels and dressed up in matching outfits wasn’t the kind of thing she was adamant on pursuing, the team decided to give her a chance.
But all of that came after Kristen Van Croonenborgh did a couple of tours in Europe as a backup girl for the same car.
Back then, “Suzy Q” wasn’t born, it was all about putting up a great show before and at the end of each race.
All of this happened a long time ago, long before Kristen and Suzy Q become one – the inseparable car and driver duo of the century.
In 2012, the Plymouth Barracuda still had the orange color. It was the first street legal modified version of the car, and Kristen had already driven it in two Dutch events. During the second event, she made it to the quarter finals list, which motivated her and the team to carry on with the plan.
As days went by, Suzy Q developed in a faster, meaner and a rather beautiful looking car. By now, Suzy Q has built a ferocious reputation of her own.
As far as the name goes, part of it is attributed to Creedance Clearwater’s song: Suzie Q and the fact that the ‘Cuda would be driven by Kristen, a female driver.
Therefore, the name had to match the music, the pizzazz and the driver’s ensemble. And let’s not forget the fact that the team did a great job at painting the car in turquoise and purple; the famous colors of the 70’s. What more could Kristen ask for…
The original engine of the 70’s ‘Cuda was taken out and replaced by a blower engine.
Kristen had prior knowledge about cars, and she also pitched in as much as possible during Suzy Q’s magnetic overhaul phases.
The roll cage was engineered and tweaked for 7.5 second runs. This was one of the major breakthrough improvements made to a 70’s car.
Same goes for changes to the car’s exhaust system and many other safety standards that would make the car’s and the driver’s life a tab bit comfortable to bear with.
Most of Suzy Q’s fame is attributed to its fabulous looks and the overall visual appeal. According to Ramon, they didn’t want to make it too sparkly or paint the Plymouth in typical pink color which is associated with girls these days.
The diligent team eventually settled on a combination of 70’s theme and purple color, alongside stylized adjustments and fonts placement.
To pull off a dramatic rich look, they covered the Metal flakes with candy purple panels, installed a flower pattern paint, customized the overall exterior with lace painting techniques and many other things.
Today, Suzy Q is sponsored by Roltrex and co-sponsored by many other companies out there.
Drag racing fans and rivals know for a fact that Kristen’s charms and the car’s beautiful looks are rather deceptive. When they are ridin’ together in unison, they can be a powerful combination of sexy looks and untamed engine power all the way to the finish line!
